Are you one of those people who have had headaches for what seems like forever? You may even have tightness in your neck and shoulders, you may feel dizzy on occasion and may easily get car sick. As an optometrist, I have not associated these symptoms with the eyes – until 2021. That’s when I learned about Neurolens. Let me explain. When you come into our office, you fill out a quick symptom questionnaire. Based on your response, you may be asked to take what we affectionately call the fish tank test. It’s really known as the Neurolens test that assesses your eye alignment. Obviously, when you come to our office for an eye exam, our goal is to get you to see 20/20, but we also want your eyes to work well together.
By assessing your eye alignment we can gain a better understanding of where your eyes align relative to the object at which you are looking. Let’s take a common item like the TV across the room from you. If you are like many people, your eyes, when in a state of rest or relaxation, may prefer to align behind the object you are looking at. That would mean that you would see double and blurry. Your brain doesn’t like that so it tells your eyes to do some work and put forth some effort by turning your eyes inward and focusing so you see clear and single.
Recognize that this doesn’t just occur when you are watching TV, but occurs with every object you are looking at all day long such as someone’s face across the room or a sign while you are driving. Now consider having to make even more effort and put in even more work to get your eyes to do the same thing for objects up close such as your computer screen, iPad or cell phone. Some people may have good eye alignment and this is not much of an issue. For them, the symptom questionnaire results will be mild, but for others, their symptoms can be fairly severe.
Fortunately, a new technology called the Neurolens has recently been developed that allows us to prescribe contoured prism to alleviate the strain and provide all day relief at every viewing distance. Initially, I was hesitant, but then I was made aware of one of my employee’s children who suffered with headaches daily for the past 6 years. He had been to several doctors and despite trying several treatments, could not find relief. When his mother was told he needed surgery for his headaches she turned to us to see if we had any other information that might help. At this time, the representative for a new company called Neurolens offered to help us get a pair of Neurolens glasses to this 11-year-old boy. Immediately, his headaches diminished significantly. His mother noted, “Within the first couple of days my son noticed relief, especially after doing homework and up close reading. It’s now been a couple of months and still no headaches! Neurolens gave my son his life back!”
I quickly became a believer and decided to invest in this instrument and join over 450 other locations across the country capable of helping provide relief to many more people who are suffering not just from headaches, but many of those other symptoms as well. I love helping my patients see clearly, but what I love even more is giving people their life back by providing relief from these symptoms that have been plaguing their life for months and even years. If you think you may be a candidate for Neurolens glasses, give us a call. Let us help you get your life back!
