st george Contact LensesThere are many reasons you may want to wear contact lenses including a glasses-free look, hassle free vision correction, wearing non-prescription sunwear or just avoiding the frustration of misplacing your glasses. Perhaps you want to experience enhanced vision correction due to high prescription that glasses just don’t provide or you want to participate in sports without fear of breaking your glasses. Whatever the reason, contact lenses can help fill a visual need.

Dr. Joseph Fife, board certified optometrist at Paradise Canyon Eye Care, in St. George, Utah, has been fitting specialty soft and gas permeable contact lenses for years and has seen some incredible changes in that time. By far the most exciting changes have occurred in the last few years with the soft disposable lenses and rigid gas permeable or hard contact lenses.

Daily Disposable lenses such as FreshDay, Biotrue and Dailies Total 1 add convenience and comfort to your daily or occasional contact lens wearing experience and with all the added parameters, the FreshDay contact lenses now correct for astigmatism and also allow those over age 40 to see up close again with limited use of readers.

Our Acuvue Oasys lenses with HydraCLEAR Plus are a great 2-week disposable contact lens option that also corrects for astigmatism. Air Optix Aqua family of contact lenses, a 1-month disposable option, have had a colorful addition to their line of lenses. Not only do they have lenses that correct for astigmatism and bifocal needs, but they now have a colored contact lens that creates a natural-looking change of eye color for those who want that subtle change in appearance.

Our Bausch & Lomb Ultra family of contact lenses provide a high value monthly modality in nearly every parameter for spherical, astigmatism or multifocal needs. These lenses are extremely breathable and comfortable. Plus, their astigmatism lenses offer the most stable rotation and vision available. As a Vision Source office, we are able to offer the largest rebate for our patients for these lenses when compared to any other non- Vision Source provider.

Rigid Gas Permeable Corneal Contact Lenses (RGP’s)

Rigid Gas Permeable Corneal Contact Lenses (RGP’s)

Although rigid contact lenses are a shrinking segment of the industry, we still have a number of patients who wear them. The gas-permeable lens materials available today far surpass those available just a few years ago in terms of eye health and comfort.

In fact, many people are unaware that these contact lens materials can correct for distance and near vision using bifocal or progressive multifocal designs similar to the lined and no-lined bifocal eyeglass lenses. Please ask us about them if you are interested in seeing distance and near without glasses and without surgery.

Synergeyes: a Hybrid Lens option

ynergeyes: a Hybrid Lens option

Another lens is the synergeyes hybrid lens which combines the comfort of the soft lens with the clarity of a rigid lens. The outer soft skirt creates the comfort while the rigid center provides the clarity.

It can be used for new contact lens wearers or previous contact lens wearers. It especially works great for people who have irregular astigmatism or keratoconus.

Scleral LensesScleral Lenses

Zenlens

Zenlens is a scleral lens that is fully vaulting and designed to fit a variety of corneal shapes and sizes. Scleral lenses are large diameter rigid lenses that vault the cornea and land on the white of the eye. Why would anyone want to wear a scleral lens? Scleral lenses offer o host of benefits over corneal lenses. For instance, they are extremely comfortable. They demonstrate exceptional stability and centration. They hide a host of corneal irregularities caused by eye diseases or surgery and because they bathe the cornea in a preservative free saline reservoir under the scleral lens they can be used to treat severe dry eye disease.

The video below, created by the Scleral Lens Society, provides instruction on wear and care of scleral lenses.
